What part of the world are you in and how long have you had the marigolds? Good question Bamboo. What part of the world are you? I thought, maybe marigolds get them too and I never noticed. No big, right? Or, at least maybe wrong. I did some digging and found that the reason marigolds, and other plants, develop purple leaves is due to a lack of phosphorous.

This can mean that either the soil itself is not rich in phosphorous or the plant is unable to absorb phosphorous efficiently. Answer Thank you for our great question.

Two possible explanations are: Your plants may be over-transpiring due to excess moisture and excess heat. You could make sure the soil dries out between waterings just to see if it makes a difference, but if the plant is growing as expected, it should not be a concern.

Your plants may have a nutrient deficiency. Find it Here Search for:. Before putting the cuttings in in the beds apply rooting inducing growth regulators to the basal portion of the cuttings is treated with a hormone powder which is marketed as Seradix B-1, Rootex-1 to encourage profuse and early rooting.

Shade should be provided initially to the beds. Regular watering should be done to keep the bed in moist conditions. With in days, rooting is observed in the cuttings which are later used as planting materials.

Mid July, middle of September and middle of February are suitable time for transplanting. At the time of transplanting the seedlings should be of 7 to 10 cm height and bear true leaves. Transplanting should be done in well prepared land in the evening hours.

Land should be ploughed 2 to 3 times to bring the soil to a fine tilth. One month old seedlings with leaves are fit for transplanting. Watering of nursery bed one day prior to uprooting will lessen the damage to root system. Uprooting of seedlings and transplanting should be done in the evening hours for better establishment. Proper spacing between plants is required for better development of plant and higher flower yield. The following spacing is recommended for marigold.

Half of nitrogen, entire dose of phosphorus and potash should be applied as basal dose, preferably one week after transplanting. Rest half of Nitrogen should be given two or three times during the vegetative growth period preferably applied one month after first application at fifteen days interval. Irrigate after each application of fertilizers. In marigold control of weeds is an important operation.

If the weeds are not removed in time, a great loss would occur in terms of growth and productivity of marigold particularly during rainy season. Hoeing and weeding should be done 3 to 4 times during the crop period to make the soil loose and weed free. Chemical weed control is also recommended. At all stages of vegetative growth days and during flower production sufficient amount of moisture in soil is essential. Moisture stress at any stage affects normal growth and flowering.

In lighter soils more frequent irrigations are required than in heavy soils. In sandy loam soil, weekly irrigation is necessary between September to March while during summer months between April to June irrigation at days intervals is required. In tall cultivars of African marigold, plants first grow upwards to their final height and later on produce a terminal flower. After the formation of terminal flower bud, axillary branches develop which also bear flower. However, if the apical portion of shoot is removed early, large numbers of axillary shoots arise resulting in well-shaped bushy plant bearing more number of uniform sized flowers.

Removal of apical portion of shoot is known as pinching. It is observed that pinching at 40 days after transplanting enhances flower yield.

However, Giant Double African Yellow and Orange do not require pinching as the plants are bushy and branching type. Marigold flowers are plucked when they have attained full size.
